A UN peacekeeper was killed Wednesday in an explosion of ordnance leftover from the Second Lebanon War, a UN official said.
The incident occurred at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday as a demining team from the UN peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL was clearing unexploded shells between the villages of Shama and Tayrharfa, near the town of Naqoura close to the Lebanese border with Israel. One UN peacekeeper died when the leftover ordnance exploded, said Yasmina Bouziane, a UNIFIL spokeswoman.
