US: thwarted Iraqi bomber blows himself up

The US military says a suicide bomber blew himself up in the city of Abu Ghraib as Iraqi troops tried to detain him. A US military spokesman in Baghdad, Maj. Al Hing, says no one else was killed in the Tuesday incident near the Abu Ghraib market. Hing says Iraqi Army soldiers attempted to detain the suspect after he fired a pistol at a civilian and that he then detonated the explosives. Hing's statement added that the US military is "very impressed with the efforts" of the Iraqi Army as they continue to "demonstrate their professionalism and dedication to provide security" for Iraqis. Abu Ghraib is about 30 kilometers, or 20 miles, west of Baghdad.
