Iran says US wants to play friendly game in Teheran
Iran Football Federation chief Ali Kafashian said Monday he received a proposal from his US counterparts to play a friendly in Teheran in October or November. Kafashian told the Fars news agency that the Iranians are considering the offer. It would not be the first time that sport has cut through the nearly 30-year diplomatic freeze. Weightlifters, basketball players and other athletes have taken part in exchanges between the two countries in recent years. But a football game would be an extremely high-profile event in Iran, where the sport is a national passion. US Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe would neither confirm nor deny the offer.
