Moldova finally elects new president

CHISINAU - Moldova's parliament on Friday elected Nicolae Timofti as the country's president, the head of the election commission said, a move which ended a protracted political impasse in the small ex-Soviet republic.
"After 917 days, the adventure of electing a president is over," commission chairman Tudor Deliu declared. The president is elected by parliament and not by popular vote in Moldova.
Timofti, 63, a veteran judge with no political allegiance, was put forward by the ruling Alliance for European Integration in a change of tactic to break a gridlock caused by parliamentary opposition from the powerful communists.
The defection of three former communist deputies meant Timofti was elected by 62 votes -- one more than the 61 required for election in the 101-seat chamber.
