Trail Race in Memory of the Sons of the Druze Community
The Druze Sons’ Trail race was held on Mount Carmel in memory of the 398 fallen IDF soldiers who belong to Israel’s Druze community.
Among those present at the event were the President of Israel, the Minister of Defense, the IDF Chief of Staff, the event’s initiator, Brigadier General (res.) Amal As‘ad, representatives of the bereaved families, numerous IDF combat units and thousands of sports fans and nature lovers from all over the country.
“The alliance between us is not just a covenant of blood, but also a covenant of life,” declared the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin, who attended the event to pay his respects. “There are trails that divide Israel, but this trail brings us together and touches the very heart of the country. Together we shall all walk this trail and other routes throughout the land.”
KKL-JNF helped to organize the event in conjunction with government ministries and numerous other bodies. The route passed through KKL-JNF forests, offering views of the magnificent scenery of Mount Carmel and providing a unique opportunity to connect with the country’s landscapes and heritage. The race was held this year for the second time, and a number of alternative routes were available: ten kilometers, five kilometers, an all-comers two-kilometer race and an off-road cycle trail.
“This race symbolizes the unity of all walks of Israeli society,” said IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz. “It’s touching to see that so many people have come along today to express their solidarity. Our fellowship with the Druze community, which has continued for decades, is based upon actions, not words.” Nor did the Chief of Staff content himself with words alone: he stripped off his uniform, donned sports gear and joined in the run.
