Rabbi Ariel arrested on suspicion of incitement Staff
Police arrested Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, one of the leaders of a movement for resurrecting the Jewish governing body known as the Sanhedrin, on suspicion of threats and incitement to violence, Israel Radio reported on Tuesday. Rabbi Ariel was accused of passing a halachic ruling last month, along with other rabbis, branding OC Central Command Ya'ir Naveh a moser - an informant or traitor - for imposing restraining orders on right-wing activists. As such, the ruling stated, anyone who came forward to kill him would be correct, according to the opinion of Maimonedes. Sources close to Rabbi Ariel claimed that the rabbi had written a halachic opinion, and that the police had returned to the days of conducting witch hunts against rabbinic authorities.
