Lauder elected President of WJCongress

After years of turmoil, Ronald S. Lauder was elected President of the New York based-World Jewish Congress late Sunday, seeking to clean up an organization which has been fraught with bitter internal wrangling and mired in allegations of financial mismanagement, officials in the organization said. Lauder, who had unexpectedly teamed with Matthew Bronfman ahead of the election to ensure his victory, faced off against the South African steel magnate and long time organization official Mendel Kaplan. Lauder won 11 votes in the organization's executive committee meeting compared to only 4 for Kaplan.
