Games We Play - Golf: Israel beats England at Ga'ash

The Israelis win six of the 15 matches, the English win 3 and six are tied at the fifth annual Anglo-Israel tournament.

The Fifth Annual Anglo-Israel Golf Tournament was held on Sunday in order to coincide with Israel's Euro 2008 qualifying round match against England. Five years ago, in the midst of a wave of terrorist attacks, two members of London's Jewish community, David Kyte and Richard Rosenberg, decided that there could be no better way to show their solidarity with Israel than to bring a team of golfers to play at the Ga'ash and Caesarea Golf Clubs. Kyte, a trustee of Maccabi World Union said, "Besides the golf, there were two memorable events over the past weekend: singing both the English and Israeli national anthems at the Ramat Gan stadium with no booing, and the group's Friday night dinner with a young woman who survived a terror attack several year's ago at 'Mike's Place' in Tel Aviv." At the dinner, a large sum of money was donated for the World Maccabi "Tikva" project, which specializes in sports and fitness programs for Israelis who have been injured in terror attacks. At Sunday's tournament one of the interesting foursomes included ex-Betar Jerusalem center-forward Gary Vandermolen, who is now the vice-captain at the Ga'ash Golf Club. Gary teamed up with club captain Avi Dagan to play against his own brothers, Michael and Lee, from the English team. Israel won six of the 15 matches, the English won 3 and six were tied, and the tournament cup stayed in Israel. Closet-to-the-pin prizes went to Howard Ross and Eli Ziv from Israel and Vic Huglin from the English team. Michael Rayner won the award for the longest drive.
