The Annual National Krav Maga Festival was held in Zichron Ya'akov last week, and was attended by many of the highest ranking martial arts experts in this country. Also participating for the first time were guests from Australia, the US, Russia and the Ukraine - all members of the Budokan Martial Arts and Israel Leadership Program, the first MASA Israel Journey program dedicated to the field of defensive tactics. The Budokan Martial Arts and Israel Leadership Program was founded by Danny Hakim, a recent oleh from Australia and two-time world karate silver medalist and Yona Melnik, veteran Israeli Olympic judo coach. The Budokan Leadership Program is now supported by the Jewish Agency and the Maccabi World Union. It brings young Jews from around the world to Israel for a five-month long curriculum of intensive martial arts and Hebrew classes. "What we give young Jewish adults from abroad is the chance to experience Israel in a very different way," says Hakim, who also directs the program. "We give them the opportunity to learn about Israel but also about themselves through the physical and mental training of traditional and contemporary martial arts."
