Shahar Pe'er advanced to the second round of the $600,000 Sydney Medibank International on Sunday morning, defeating German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-4, 6-2. The Israeli, who is expected to rise to 18th in the world when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday morning, showed no lasting affects from her heartbreaking defeat on Friday to Dinara Safina (11) in the Gold Coast semifinal and blew away Groenefeld (19) in 1 hour 18 minutes. Pe'er will next play the winner of the first-round match between Patty Schnyder (9) and Vera Dushevina (97) for a place in the quarterfinals.
