Shahar Pe'er cruised into the second round of the German Open on Monday by defeating local favorite Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-1, 6-2 in Berlin.
The Israeli, who is No. 15 in the WTA singles rankings and seeded 13th at the $1.3-million, Tier I event, took advantage of the German's poor serving throughout the match and dominated. Groenefeld's (46) low first-serve percentage (44%) allowed Pe'er to reach 12 break points during the two sets, converting six on her way to the comfortable victory.
The Israeli will next face the winner of the first-round match between Greek Eleni Daniilidou (44) and German Martina Muller (42).
Pe'er raced to a 4-0 lead at the start of the match and wrapped up the first set in the seventh game.
After breaking in the first game of the second set, the Israeli coasted to a straight-set win and booked her place in the second round.
