Tzipi Obziler needs to win just one more game on Tuesday to book a second-round meeting against world No. 11 Dinara Safina in the French Open. Obziler (95) was leading 6-3, 5-4, against Hungarian Melinda Czink (123) and was preparing to serve for the match before rain suspended play.
Shahar Pe'er's (17) first-round match against Kaia Kanepi (55) and Anna Smashnova's (135) match against Nuria Llagostera Vives (267) never even got started. Smashnova's match has been rescheduled for Tuesday, while Pe'er's is set for Wednesday. After splitting the first two games of the match, Czink got the first break of the set and went on to open a 3-1 lead. Obziler nevertheless continued plugging away and took the next three games.
However, with the momentum seemingly shifting to the veteran Israeli, rain interrupted play with the score at 40-40 in the seventh game of the set and the players had to take cover in the locker rooms for over an hour. Despite the break, the Israeli continued to dominate when the players returned to court and claimed the next two games to wrap up the first set.
Obziler broke once more in the first game of the second set and seemed to be in full control after taking a 2-0 lead. Czink won the next two games and tied the score, but once again the Israeli opened a two-game lead and moved within just two games of the second round.
Obziler squandered two break points in the seventh game of the set and the Hungarian took the next two games to tie the score. Just before the rain began falling for a second time, the Israeli opened a 5-4 lead with a break in the ninth game and moved within a single game of victory.
