Morales was awarded the Friends of Zion Award a few months ago in a ceremony at the Guatemalan President’s Office to mark his steadfast support for strong Guatemala-Israel relations.
Mattanya Cohen, Israel’s ambassador to Guatemala and Honduras, said in a Kan Bet interview that Guatemala has a tradition of friendship for Israel that goes back to 1947.
The US is scheduled to move its embassy to Jerusalem on May 14, followed two days later by Guatemala.
Already in March Paraguay indicated that it would relocate its embassy if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to visit.
