Mamdani responded to the accusations of antisemitism he has received since the statement in a tearful address Wednesday, telling reporters, “It pains me to be called an antisemite.”

“Today, I was informed of my removal from the United States Holocaust Memorial Council,” Emhoff said in a statement to the NYT. “Holocaust remembrance and education should never be politicized.

"The number of Jews murdered that day was the highest since the Holocaust," he said. "But there’s a difference—now we can fight back, and we will, until all our hostages return."

The 9,000-square-foot museum occupying eight floors in an octagon-shaped structure will be located at the site of Thessaloniki’s Old Railway Station.

The Los Angeles Holocaust Museum has already begun this process with partners in Atlanta and New Zealand.

The incident drew national outrage, with French President Emmanuel Macron attacking the vandals for undermining the memory of French heroes and the victims of the Holocaust.

Labour's commitment to the memorial also follows Starmer's efforts to root out antisemitism from his party following a 2020 report.
