As many as 13,000 homes in the Bahamas may have been destroyed or severely damaged, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.
Dorian strengthened into an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane, the US National Hurricane Center said on Friday.
Dorian is expected to strengthen and slam the Bahamas and the southeastern United States with rain, strong winds and life-threatening surf over the next few days.
Further weakening to a tropical depression was expected on Sunday as Barry moved inland, the NHC said.
