"We have good news for America. There will not be a shutdown on Friday," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said on the Senate floor just before the vote in that chamber.

Sanders’s hostility toward Israel is well known – he couches it in an enmity to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the policies of right-wing governments, but it seems to go beyond that.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced the resolution last year on Dec. 14. 

The letter takes particular aim at Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, asking the university presidents, “Do your diversity, equity, and inclusion departments serve Jewish students on campus?”

The letter cited a study that said 73 percent of Jewish college students surveyed experienced or witnessed antisemitic incidents on their campuses since the start of the 2023-24 school year.

“The State of Israel is an invaluable and trusted ally of the United States and a beacon of democracy in the Middle East," Kansas representatives and senators said.

As an advocate of healthcare as a right and criminal justice reform, Fetterman says "I would be the last man standing to be absolutely there on the Israeli side on this with no conditions.

The video had been initially shared in a private group chat for gay men in politics, before being leaked online.

Some of the demonstrators protesting against Israel were arrested at the scene.

The House bill would provide $14.3 billion for Israel as it responds to a deadly Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, but also cut the same amount of money from the IRS.
