Last week we reported on a Chagall of great charm ($270,000-$350,000) which leads the June 25 sale of Matsa Auctions in Ramat Gan; and also on five prominent vases of flowers, one by Moise Kisling (starts at $160,000); two by Reuven Rubin (one of which starts at $110,000); another by Jankel Adler in the modern English manner of the '20s ($23,000); and one by Nahum Gutman, 1940 ($30,000).
There's a very early figurative Yosl Bergner, Rabbis in Safed ($24,000), and a splendid Bergner still life of graters beautifully painted in 1965 ($10,800-$13,000). A rather pedantic Isidor Kaufmann of a young lady sitting pensively at her desk is well brought off but curiously static (starts at $30,000, not much for a Kaufmann).
There are 371 lots in this sale. Among them is an unusually wild freehand oil sketch by Maurice Utrillo of what may be the Moulin Rouge in Montmartre ($16,000-$25,000) and a lively street scene by Michel Kikoine ($11,000-$14,000). An Abel Pann pastel from the '20s of a startled Yemenite girl is expected to reach $35,000-$45,000. A similar price is hoped for a Marcel Janco landscape with palm trees. A firmer Janco tabletop with a mandolin has similar ambitions. A tall Lea Nikel from the mid-'60s has a rich warm palette ($7,000-$10,000) and a lovely Avigdor Arikha monochrome brush drawing of his wife starts at $16,000.
