Israel (Sasha) Demidov stars as Herman Broder, the hero of Isaac Bashevis Singer's Enemies, a Love Story, that opens the 2008/'09 season on November 29 at the Gesher Theater in Jaffa.
It's 1949 in New York where Broder, a Holocaust survivor, has settled with his would-be Jewish convert wife Jadwiga, the Polish Christian who hid him from the Nazis. There's also Masha, his mistress, a survivor like him, whom he wants to marry. Then, to complicate matters even more, his first wife Tamara turns up, though he thought she had been murdered back in Poland.
What do you do when past and present conflict, asks Singer, and where is God in all this? Is love even possible in our time?
Enemies was translated by Roy Hen and is directed by Yevgeny Arye, thus completing the Singer trilogy which started with The Slave (2002) and Shosha (2003). Hen and Arye adapted the work from Singer's novel. The Yiddish daily, Forward, published it in installments in 1966, and it appeared in English in 1972.
