Until now, the two places to see dance in Tel Aviv were the Suzanne Dellal Center and the Tmuna Theater. This week, another venue is an option. Operating out of their own studio and performing on a stage built for this production, the Noa Dar Dance Group celebrates the 100th performance of Tetris. Having premiered in 2006 at the Acco Festival for Alternative Israeli Theater, Tetris is an innovative and physical work where the crowd is ushered in to the performance space where they select one of 69 stools to stand on. Once standing, the voyeur's head fits through a small hole cut out of the stage. From this unique vantage point each audience member takes in the dynamic movement choreographed by Dar. This perspective for audience members is just as unusual as it is for the dancers. Speaking of this uncommon arrangement, a member of the cast says, "We spend a lot of the show checking out the audience and talking about them amongst ourselves." This closeness between performer and viewer creates an intimacy that is rarely found in dance shows. Consequently, this production is particularly moving. The Noa Dar Dance Group has presented Tetris on three continents and has plans for even more travel. The show has received heaps of praise since its premier and will certainly continue to surprise and delight new audiences. Gal Alster, writing in Time Out Tel Aviv, says that, "no doubt, [Tetris] is the creation of the year, maybe of the decade, in Israeli dance." Tetris runs from September 11-19.
