A documentary about the mothers of a Palestinian terrorist and her Israeli victim was named the winner of a Peabody Award last week. To Die in Jerusalem, a look at the mothers of teenage suicide bomber Ayat al-Akhras and Jewish teenager Rachel Levy, will be honored as one of the "most outstanding achievements" of electronic media in 2007 in a June ceremony at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The award will be accepted by the film's American producers and by Hilla Medalia, its Israeli director.
The Peabodys, handed out annually by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, are among the most prestigious prizes in American media. Other winners announced last Wednesday include three US TV news reports on the Iraq War, as well as God's Warriors, reporter Christiane Amanpour's controversial CNN series on religious extremism.
To Die in Jerusalem, which followed the unsuccessful attempts of Israeli mother Abigail Levy to meet the mother of her daughter's killer, screened at last summer's Jerusalem Film Festival and in November on HBO.
