AMMAN - Syrian forces killed at least five civilians when their tanks shelled the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Saturday, a main activists' group said, in an escalating military assault to stop Sunni tribal dissent against President Bashar Assad.
"More tank columns are heading to Deir al-Zor. By using heavy weapons, security forces are waging war against their own people," the Syrian Revolution Coordination Union grassroots activists' group said in a statement sent to Reuters.
