Assange 'extremely gratified' by WikiLeaks role in Tunisia

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said that he believed the ouster of former Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and the subsequent unrest in neighboring countries against autocratic regimes were sparked by documents revealed by the whistleblowing website. Assange's comments came in an interview with Australian video journalist Mark Davis released Sunday.

Assange said that cables published through Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar showing that the US would not necessarily back Ben Ali in the event of unrest gave Tunisia's military and people the confidence to challenge the regime.

He said that Tunisia then served as an example for Egypt, Yemen and Jordan, where unrest followed.

Assange stated that the events and WikiLeaks part in them was "extremely gratifying."
