Cameron calls Britain the 'junior partner' to the US

British Prime Minister David Cameron came under a storm of criticism Thursday for referring to Britain as the "junior partner" to the US.

Speaking in an interview with Sky News, he said "I think it's important in life to speak as it is, and the fact is that we are a very effective partner of the US, but we are the junior partner. We were the junior partner in 1940 when we were fighting the Nazis."

1940 was before the US had entered World War II. Cameron responded to criticism by saying he had meant a junior partner in the 1940's in general, rather than in the war.

Cameron repeated his remarks in another interview with Dianne Sawyer on ABC. "We were the junior partner in 1940 when we were fighting against Hitler; we are the junior partner now. I think you shouldn't pretend to be something you're not."
