Car crash on Route 1 kills one, injures five others

A car crash on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway on Sunday night killed a man and injured five others, paramedics reported.

Three of the people involved had reportedly exited their vehicle on the side of the busy route near the Latrun junction after it had broken down, when another vehicle containing a man and two young women hit the group.

Magen David Adom paramedics pronounced the death of a 30-year old man at the scene. He had been among those waiting on the side of the road.

Those who survived were transferred to hospital for further treatment. One of the women who was outside the broken-down vehicle was described as in a serious condition, with the others either lightly or moderately injured.

It remains unclear as to why the second vehicle hit the three on the side of the highway. Route 1 is often the scene of serious traffic incidents; much of the highway lacks a hard shoulder, making a break-down a dangerous occurrence.
