Clashes break out in Bahrain before planned protest rally

DUBAI — Witnesses in Bahrain said riot police clashed with protesters ahead of planned rallies that could mark the first major Egypt-inspired demonstrations in the Gulf on Monday.
The reports said police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse marchers in the mostly Shi'ite village of Newidrat in the southwest region of the island kingdom. The witnesses say there were some injuries from the Monday clash.
Opposition groups were calling for major rallies later Monday. Bahrain's majority Shi'ites complain of systematic discrimination by Bahrain's ruling Sunni dynasty.
