FICC withdraws anti-strike petition at court's request

The Federation of Israel Chambers of Commerce on Tuesday withdrew a petition seeking to limit solidarity strikes with the Israel Postal Company at the National Labor Court's request.

The FICC had filed the petition to curtail strikes that shut down services in the country ranging from court services to border crossings for goods and, for a few hours, Ben Gurion International Airport.

The Histadrut Labor Federation has used the strikes to slowly ramp up pressure on the government, with which it is negotiating over the fates of 1,500 postal workers. The government wants to replace the 1,500 with inexpensive contract workers as part of rehabilitation plan for the money-losing Postal company.

According to the FICC, the Histadrut shifted its argumentation in the court hearing, saying that the strikes were related to contract workers and not proportionality. The FICC maintained the right to refile a new petition if solidarity strikes continue.

Meanwhile, intense, late-night negotiations between the Histadrut and Finance Ministry on the issue began on Sunday night, but have thus far not yielded any results.
