IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz appointed retired Maj.-Gen. Yishai Be’er as head of a committee that will rule on the controversy that broke out recently regarding the wording of the IDF’s Yizkor memorial prayer.

Over 40,000 people have signed an online petition calling on Gantz to order all units to use the version that gives no mention to God. Currently, IDF units decide independently which version to use – mentioning God or not.

Chief Military Rabbi Brig.-Gen. Rafi Peretz and Chief Education Officer Brig.-Gen. Eli Shermeister will also serve on the panel.
