Garbage bins will become colorful to encourage recycling

The Standards Institution of Israel has standardized the colors for roadside trash bins to enable easier source separation to encourage recycling. Standard 6044 was crafted in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Ministry, which is attempting to replace landfill dumping with recycling.

Garbage bins will be color coded:· Green - unrecyclable "dry" waste
· Brown – organic "wet" waste
· Orange – recyclable items
· Blue – paper
· Gray – metal
· Purple – glass
· Yellow – plastic
· Black – electronics
· Cream – textiles

The SII said that the first step would be for the municipalities to secure green, brown and orange bins. The rest would likely follow. The standard also enables the switching of garbage lids rather than the whole trash can so as to reduce costs.
