Groups sue Trump administration over social media disclosure requirements

WASHINGTON - Two documentary film groups filed suit Thursday against the Trump administration challenging new rules adopted earlier this year that require nearly all U.S. visitors to disclose social media user information used in the last five years.

The groups, who are represented by the Knight First Amendment Institute, argue "the surveillance regime chills visa applicants from engaging in constitutionally protected speech and association, deters them from traveling to the US, and deprives US audiences opportunities to engage with filmmakers from around the world." The rules require disclosure of all social media handles used over the prior five years by U.S. visa applicants, including ones under pseudonyms on 20 platforms. Twitter Inc said it supports "protecting the right of people to speak anonymously without fear of reprisals or retribution."
