Hackers seize Lebanon ministry website in protest

BEIRUT - Hackers took over the website of Lebanon's Labor Ministry on Tuesday, demanding better living standards and calling on citizens struggling through tough economic times to "mobilize, demand their rights and earn them".

The website's official masthead was replaced with a picture of loaves of bread and a cartoon of an emaciated man in a loincloth, representing the Lebanese people, feeding gruel to a fat man in a suit and tie, symbolizing the government.

The hacking, the second such online demonstration by a group that calls itself Raise Your Voice, is a sign of the growing frustration with the economic situation in Lebanon, where many people complain about soaring prices and stagnant wages.

The nation of 4 million is one of the few countries not hit by a wave of popular revolts that spread across the Arab world. But small protests over wages and living conditions are becoming a daily affair.

Lebanon's economy has been hit hard by the year-long revolt in neighboring Syria, which has affected trade, while power struggles between competing religious and political groups have hindered efforts at political and economic reform.

Raise Your Voice hacked into 15 government websites last month in a similar protest over living standards.
