Hel Yesca abattoir shut down for pollution

The Environmental Protection Ministry enforced a court order this week to shut down the Hel Yesca slaughterhouse in Or Yehuda for failure to comply with its demands regarding sewage treatment.
The chicken slaughterhouse did not have the proper equipment to treat its highly saline sewage and failed to erect the proper facilities before the court's deadline of February 10. The slaughterhouse uses 1,500 tons of salt a year in the process of ritually slaughtering the chickens, which the Or Yehuda waste treatment facility could not handle.
As a result, the sewage was polluting the Ayalon stream and agriculture land in the Negev where it was being reused. The high salt caused irreversible damage to the land, crops and the ground water in the area, the ministry said Tuesday.
