Interfaith delegation postponed

The inter-denominational delegation from Israel, set to meet with Muslim religious leaders in Turkey, has been indefinitely postponed, primarily due to the killing of Osama bin Laden. A group composed of a rabbi, Catholic priest, Druse kadi and a Beduin sheikh – led by Deputy Minister for Development of the Negev and Galilee, Ayoub Kara – was supposed to hold three days of meetings, beginning Wednesday, with Islamic philosopher and preacher Adnan Oktar, as well as Prof. Mustafa Cagrici.

The sides, which have met in the past, planned to discuss moderation in religion, and ways to enhance understanding between the faiths. But following bin Laden’s killing, as well as other factors, the sides decided to put off the meeting. A new date has yet to be set.

A member of the postponed delegation surmised that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s planned attendance at the US-sponsored Least Developed Countries Summit in Istanbul on Monday, also might have been a factor in putting the visit off.
