Iran condemned on Saturday the Canadian government's decision to sever diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman attributed the move to Canada's "extremist government," which is under the influence of the "Zionist regime." He stated that Iran's Embassy in Ottawa would be closed immediately due to Canada's "hostile decision."

The Canadian government had given Iranian diplomats five days to leave the country.
