'Israel aimed to keep Gaza economy on brink of collapse'

In the period before Operation Cast Lead, Israeli officials said that the aim of Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip was to keep Gaza's economy on the brink of collapse without pushing it over the edge, a US diplomatic cable obtained by Norwegian paper Aftenposten showed Wednesday

The cable dated 3 November 2008, which was released by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks, suggested that Israeli intelligence agencies and politicians said that the plan was to keep Gaza economy functioning at the lowest possible level without causing a humanitarian crisis.
