Italy, Israel, Senegal sign agricultural agreement

Italy, Israel and Senegal have signed a trilateral agreement to develop an agricultural project in Senegal, the Foreign Ministry announced. The project, managed by MASHAV – Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation and an Italian aid agency, will involve 8,000 farmers at a cost of $13 million, of which MASHAV is investing $1.5 million.

Guiding the project will be two experts, an Italian who will be responsible for implementing an irrigation program and an Israel who will be responsible for training and capacity building, according to the Foreign Ministry. Senegalese agriculturalists will be managing the project on the ground.

The project will be based on the Israeli concept TIPA, which was first presented by MASHAV at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, information from MASHAV said. TIPA involves using low-pressure drip-irrigation, a mix of vegetable and tree crops and a management package for production optimization, and first began implementing pilot projects in Senegal in 2006, according to MASHAV.
