J'lem teen admits to starting synagogue blaze

Jerusalem police received a partial break in the case of a recent string of synagogue fires that have shrouded the capital in mystery over the past week, when a 15 year-old girl who was arrested on Tuesday admitted to starting a blaze that damaged the ark and its curtain inside a shul on Panim Meirot Street in the capital's Romema neighborhood on Saturday night.

According to police, the girl told investigators that she had started the fire as an act of revenge directed at haredim who had been harassing her in the neighborhood, although police stressed that her comments were not meant in a sexual manner.

The girl said she had found the synagogue door opened, and after entering the building and starting the fire, fled the scene.

While her admission sheds light on one of the three recent synagogue fires that have occurred in the capital over the last week, police did not tie her actions to the other two fires, and said that the investigation regarding those blazes was ongoing.
