A man from Rishon Lezion is in custody due to police suspicions that he killed his own mother on Wednesday night.

The suspect, a migrant from Russia, has denied the suspicions during police questioning.

He contacted paramedics and requested that they go to his mother's home, where her body was found with apparent choke marks.

Police arrested him soon afterwards.

"The circumstances of this incident are not yet clear," a police spokeswoman said. She declined to comment whether the man had a history of mental health issues. It was also not immediately clear whether the man was an Israeli citizen.

The Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court extended his custody by nine days.
