US Middle East envoy George Mitchell was set to meet with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak Thursday as he finished his first round of talks in Ramallah, Israel Radio reported.
Mitchell was quoted as saying that Israel was interested in starting direct talks as soon as possible. The Palestinians, he said, were the ones preventing this from taking place.
Jerusalem noted that some core subjects were touched upon during the proximity talks, but real progress would only be possible through direct talks.
