Nation state bill advances to final vote

The special committee legislating the controversial Jewish nation state bill passed the legislation by an 8 to 7 vote Wednesday morning along to coalition and opposition lines, preparing for the bill to pass into law as early as Wednesday night.
The opposition intends to filibuster int he Knesset plenum, which could delay the final vote on the bill until as late as Friday. While committee chairman Amir Ohana (Likud) praised the bill's passage in his committee, saying that "the Jewish people deserve a Jewish state," Joint List MK Ahmed Tibi condemned the bill.
"We are now seeing with shock the death of our democracy, which has been dying in recent years, and suffering from the racism that has hit a new peak with this bill," Tibi said.
