Peres: Iranian warships a provocation, not a threat

President Shimon Peres on Wednesday said that the passage of two Iranian warships through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea constitutes a provocation, but not a real threat. The president's comments came at a question and answer session with important public and government officials in Spain.
Peres said that the true threat posed by Iran to Europe and the world was the Islamic Republic's plans to develop nuclear weapons. The president said that if dramatic measures are not taken against Iran, all of Europe's capitals will be under the threat of attack from Tehran and its proxies.
Peres stated that Iran was attempting to gain control of the entire Middle East and to force religious hegemony on all of the region's people.
He said that the world must wage a moral campaign against Iran in addition to the financial sanctions being levied against Tehran. Peres said that world leaders who take photo opportunities with Ahmadinejad should be ashamed of themselves. He called on the UN to stop giving the Iranian president a forum for his ideas.
