MANILA - Philippine police has arrested a suspected al Qaeda-linked Islamist militant who was blacklisted by the United Nations for involvement in attacks in the Southeast Asian state, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

Ricardo Ayeras, a Muslim convert known as Abdul Karim, was detained while walking near a hospital in the capital late on Monday, chief superintendent Agrimero Cruz told reporters.

"Ayeras was arrested on the strength of an arrest warrant for his role in the bombing of an airport on the southern island of Mindanao in 2003," Cruz said.
