Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has "given a green light" to his aides to ask the UN Security Council to recognize a unilaterally declared Palestinian state, London-based daily Asharq al-Awsat reported on Thursday.

The paper reported, however, that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit asked the Palestinian leadership to give Washington another chance to negotiate a two-state solution. Gheit also reportedly said that the US must apply further pressure on Israel, before time runs out for a peace plan.
