Report: Italian PM's associate was link to Sicilian mafia

A long-time friend of Silvio Berlusconi who helped him enter politics also served as an intermediary between the prime minister and the Sicilian mafia, a court in Palermo ruled Friday night, according to The Guardian.
Judges said that before his entry into politics, Berlusconi paid "enormous sums of money" to Cosa Nostra for protection and later gave funds to protect his network's broadcast stations in Sicily.
Excerpts from the document did not make clear whether the the judges considered Berlusconi to have been a victim or a beneficiary of his ties with the mafia, reported The Guardian.
