Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday said that the historic phone conversation with his US counterpart Barack Obama was initiated by the White House, semi-official Iranian Fars news agency reported.

Obama and Rouhani's talk marked the first instance of communication between top-level leaders of the two countries since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

"Yesterday (Friday) at the moment we were preparing for moving towards the airport (to leave New York after attending the UN General Assembly meeting), the White House contacted us and expressed the willingness of the US president to have a phone conversation for some minutes," Fars quoted Rouhani as saying upon his return to Tehran.
