Sam Norich, Publisher of the The Jewish Daily Forward, has resigned from the board of the Conference of Jewish Material Claims Against Germany almost immediately after the reelection of embattled chairman Julius Berman.

Norich had previously backed calls by the Jewish Agency and World Jewish Congress for an independent probe of the Holocaust restitution organization.

For a period of sixteen years ending in 2009, the Claims Conference failed to detect $57 million in fraud, despite the receipt of a 2001 letter alleging improprieties in the claims approval process and two subsequent failed investigations.

In a letter to the Post on Friday, Norich stated that his reasons for resigning will be enumerated in an upcoming Forward op-ed.
