Stephan Kramer resigns from Jewish council in Germany

Stephan Kramer announced his resignation as the secretary-general of the Central Council of Jews in Germany on Thursday. He has held the position since 2004, and his resignation is to take effect at the end of the month.

The council, known in German as the Zentralrat, is the main representative body of organized German Jewry.

“It has been a profound honor to serve this vital organization and to help the council fulfill its historic mission,” Kramer said. “It has been especially rewarding to work with the council’s preeminent leadership and outstanding staff, all of whom have been, and are, steadfastly dedicated to the promotion of Jewish well-being and interfaith understanding in Germany.”

Kramer has worked on many issues of interest to the Jewish community, including the 2012 fight over the legality of circumcision in Germany. As a leader of Germany’s Jewish community, he held a seat on the board of directors of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, where he advocated increased transparency and board involvement.
