Straschnov replaces Zeiler as medical negligence ombudsman

Dr. Amnon Straschnov, a retired district court judge and Israel Defense Forces chief public prosecutor was appointed by Prime Minister and formally Health Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to be in charge of deciding the cases of alleged negligence by doctors, nurses dentists and pharmacists. Currently, Straschnov works as president of the Israel Business Mediation Institution.
He replaces the former retired judge Vardi Zeiler, who previously held the post and before that was president of the Jerusalem District Court.
For years, the health minister who took action on such cases, but then authority was given to an outsider to be more objective. Deputy Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman recommended Straschnov for the post. After examining the evidence and hearing testimony, the judge decides not only whether a medical professional was negligent but also if his license will be canceled or suspended or other action is taken against him.
