KHARTOUM — A senior northern Sudanese official Friday said voting in the southern referendum is going smoothly and the ruling party is ready to accept the likely independence of the south.

A week-long independence referendum is expected to favor dividing Africa's largest nation in two. The international community is waiting to see if the north will accept the results and avert a return to violence over the secession.

Ibrahim Ghandour said Friday that his party will accept the results and is looking forward to "brotherly" relations with the new state.
