Swede convicted in Auschwitz theft sent to Sweden

WARSAW, Poland — Polish police said Monday that a Swedish man convicted in the theft of the notorious "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign from Auschwitz is being returned to his homeland to serve his prison term.

Police spokesman Dariusz Nowak said Anders Hogstrom was handed to Swedish officials on Monday at Krakow airport.

Hogstrom was found guilty of instigating the theft in December 2009 of the "Work Sets You Free" sign, which had spanned the entrance gate at the former Nazi German death camp. Police found the sign torn into three pieces three days after the theft.

Sweden agreed to send Hogstrom, a 35-year-old with a Neo-Nazi past, to Poland during the investigation on condition that he return to serve any possible sentence. A Polish court sentenced him to two years and eight months.
