Turkish police crack down on Kurdish party

A pro-Kurdish party says police have detained at least 25 of its members in raids on party offices in the country's southeast.

The state-run Anatolia news agency says the suspects, including the local leader of the Peace and Democracy Party in Sanliurfa province, face accusations of ties to Kurdish rebels, organizing illegal demonstrations and firebomb attacks as well as recruiting guerrillas.

Ali Ozguc, a party spokesman, says police raided the party branch in the town of Suruc as well as the local headquarters in Sanliurfa on Friday.

The crackdown comes a day after the rebels extended a cease-fire until Oct. 30 to seek dialogue with the state in response to a call by imprisoned Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan to give the talks a chance.
